Haibat al-Halbousi received retired US General and former Central Intelligence Agency Director David Petraeus in Baghdad on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

According to a statement from the Parliament Speaker’s media office, the meeting focused on political and security developments in Iraq as well as wider regional and international changes shaping the Middle East.

The discussions also reviewed Iraq’s internal situation following the formation of the country’s new government, alongside broader geopolitical developments affecting regional stability.

The visit highlighted ongoing strategic dialogue between Iraqi leaders and international security figures regarding long-term security and political cooperation in the region.

In a related meeting held the same day, Faiq Zidan, head of the Supreme Judicial Council, met with Petraeus and expressed appreciation for his previous role in supporting efforts against terrorism and promoting national reconciliation during his time serving in Iraq.
