Member of Parliament Yasser Hashem affirmed on Monday that the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) cannot be viewed as a sectarian organization or tied to any specific sect, stressing that the group played a decisive role in defeating terrorism across Iraq.

In a statement to dinaropinions.com, Hashem said the PMF fought and helped liberate the western and northern provinces from ISIS, adding that foreign interference and internal political pressures have obstructed the passage of legislation regulating the PMF’s structure and operations.

“The parliamentary term ended without the PMF law being enacted due to external pressures and interference in its affairs,” Hashem stated.

He emphasized that while the PMF already operates under an existing legal framework, the new proposed law would further organize the force’s work, rights, and duties, but efforts to pass it have faced repeated delays.

Hashem concluded that attempts to portray the PMF as sectarian are “unfounded,” noting its contributions to maintaining Iraq’s security and unity following the defeat of ISIS.
