Iraqi Member of Parliament Inam Alaa Al-Din said on Saturday that the country urgently needs clear, long-term economic plans to address its financial crisis and monetary problems. She rejected the idea of using exchange rate changes or other measures that place additional pressure on ordinary citizens and low-income families.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com, Al-Din said Iraq cannot solve its economic problems through quick fixes that directly affect people’s daily lives. She warned that raising the dollar exchange rate against the Iraqi dinar can quickly push up market prices, especially for basic goods and food.

She said the government and relevant economic institutions should focus on sustainable ways to increase state revenue without placing more pressure on citizens.

Her proposals included supporting industry and agriculture, improving customs collection at border crossings, recovering misused public funds and fighting corruption in financial and commercial activities.

Al-Din also said Parliament was urging financial institutions and the Central Bank of Iraq to adopt sound monetary policies that protect the national currency and preserve people’s purchasing power.

She warned that attempts to make citizens bear the cost of financial and administrative failures through exchange rate measures would face strong opposition from lawmakers and the public because of their impact on living standards and social stability.

Earlier, economist Abdul Rahman Al-Mashhadani said increasing the dollar exchange rate could provide the government with short-term liquidity, but argued that the measure alone would not amount to meaningful financial reform without a broader economic strategy.
