Member of Parliament Mohammed Karim said the proposed Asset Recovery Law could become one of Iraq’s most important anti-corruption measures, providing a clearer framework for managing public funds and strengthening efforts to recover stolen state assets.
Karim explained that the legislation would establish stricter procedures for monitoring and investigating the wealth of officials and individuals holding positions of authority, while also simplifying legal processes for pursuing those wanted by the judiciary.
According to him, the law would enhance the ability of judicial institutions and the Integrity Commission to track corruption cases and hold those responsible accountable. He added that it would also create legal mechanisms aimed at recovering smuggled and misappropriated public funds and returning them to the state treasury.
Karim noted that the legislation could help reduce opportunities for financial misconduct by closing loopholes that have been exploited in cases involving public money.
The comments come after the Council of Ministers submitted the Asset Recovery and Proceeds of Corruption Law to Parliament for consideration and approval.
