Al-Zaidi’s ability to define clear priorities and balance conflicting interests will determine how successful he is. Washington is keeping a careful eye on developments regarding stability, economic reforms, and reducing the role of militias, thus the US backing is genuine but conditional. In my opinion, this is a test of al-Zaidi’s ability to transform political agreements into a functional government. Although it comes with expectations, US backing is now beneficial for stability. Al-Zaidi must do a difficult balancing act. The fundamental infrastructure and economic work continues, but the political aspect is still problematic.
