Parliamentary call to establish a national telecommunications company that would provide the budget with huge revenues

Member of Parliament Haider al-Mutairi said Thursday that establishing a national mobile phone company would be a strategic move to strengthen Iraq’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil revenues.

Al-Mutairi told dinaropinions.com that telecommunications represent one of the most promising non-oil sectors, capable of generating sustainable income for the state. “Developed countries diversify their income sources to fund expenses and achieve economic stability. Relying solely on oil is no longer sustainable,” he said.

He revealed that the annual profits of a single telecom operator in Iraq exceeded two trillion dinars in 2024, underscoring the sector’s profitability and potential contribution to the national budget.

According to the MP, a state-owned telecom firm could direct part of its profits toward supporting education, healthcare, and public services, while also enhancing competition, improving service quality, and lowering consumer costs.

Al-Mutairi emphasized that creating a national telecom company would mark a major step toward diversifying revenue streams and achieving long-term economic stability.
