Parliamentary calls for the next government to end Turkish blackmail regarding the water issue

MP Miqdad al-Khafaji has urged Iraq’s next government to treat the water crisis as a top priority, calling for stronger action to protect the country’s water rights.

He said the incoming government must deal with the issue seriously and push Turkey to stop what he described as pressure on Iraq’s water supply.

According to al-Khafaji, the water issue should be placed at the center of the new government’s program. He added that taking clear and firm steps would likely gain strong support in parliament.

He also warned that staying silent is no longer an option. In his view, Iraq needs real, practical solutions on the ground—not just statements.

The water crisis continues to be one of the country’s biggest challenges. With growing concerns over shortages, there are increasing calls for decisive action to secure water resources and reduce the impact on people’s daily lives.

For many, the message is clear: this issue can’t be delayed any longer, and the next government will be judged by how it handles it.
