Parliamentary Finance: Legal and political pressure to amend paragraphs in the budget, most notably Kurdistan salaries

Mustafa Sanad, a member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, disclosed on Sunday that there is “legal and political” pressure to change some sections of the 2024 budget bill, which the Iraqi Parliament approved as a three-year budget for the years 2023, 2024, and 2025 last year.

“There are two legal and political pressures to amend the budget law,” Sanad stated, pointing out that “the general budget law has an article requiring the government to send the schedules for the following year over the current year for the purpose of amending them.”

Sanad clarified, saying, “This amendment will come from the government, but there is no specific date for sending the amendment to the budget law to Parliament.” Political pressure, she said, is pressure from the Kurdistan area and the Prime Minister to alter the item linked to the area.

“The House will have many amendments, including the addition of articles, the most important of which is the allocation of job grades, the medical grading file, and the appointments of the top ones in colleges, given that the appointments were related to the 2023 budget and have expired,” Sanad continued, if the amendment to the budget law made it to the House of Representatives.
