The latest developments in the oil and gas law negotiations were disclosed by the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee on Tuesday. The committee pointed out that any future deal is impeded by Erbil’s high demands.
“The region is sitting at the dialogue table in order to speed up the legislation of the oil and gas law,” committee member Kazem Al-Touki stated in an interview with
“In addition to the high ceiling of demands by the regional government in exchange for legislation of the oil and gas law,” he said, “some technical points turned into political points.”
In line with the Iraqi constitution, he emphasized the need to “legislate the oil and gas law to regulate the export of oil and distribute revenues to the oil-producing governorates.”
“The federal government will not accept any demands other than turning over the entire oil file,” he said, adding that it would no longer accept any restrictions that the regional administration wished to impose.
