Petro pitches Bitcoin mining boom for Colombia’s Caribbean coast

Colombian President Gustavo Petro says the country’s Caribbean coast could turn into a Bitcoin mining hub — but only if it uses clean energy and includes local communities.

He pointed to cities like Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha as possible locations for mining operations.

The idea is simple: use the region’s strong wind and solar energy to attract Bitcoin miners and turn unused power into income. Petro said this could give the Caribbean region a big economic boost. (Cointelegraph)

He also wants the Wayúu community involved — not just as workers, but as possible co-owners of the projects. The goal is to make sure locals benefit directly if mining takes off. (Blockchain News)

Petro compared the idea to countries like Paraguay and Venezuela, where cheap and clean energy has already attracted Bitcoin mining investment. These countries are using extra electricity to generate new revenue. (MEXC)

Colombia could follow a similar path. The country already gets a large share of its electricity from renewable sources, which makes the plan more realistic. (Blockchain News)

But right now, it’s just an idea — not a confirmed project. There’s no official mining partner, no launch date, and no clear structure yet.

There’s also a timing issue. Petro’s term ends soon, and a new government will take over after the upcoming election. That means the final decision on whether this plan moves forward won’t be his.

So for now, it’s more of a vision than a finished plan:
use clean energy, attract Bitcoin mining, and share the benefits with local communities — if the next government agrees to continue it.
