Record August for TIR Transit Journeys in Iraq

Iraq recorded 1,754 cross-border transit trips under the TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) system during August, reflecting continued growth in international road freight movement through the country.

Murtadha Karim Al-Shahmani, Director General of the General Company for Land Transport, said the increase was driven by ongoing cooperation between the relevant government authorities and the efforts of the company’s local guarantor team, as well as the Ministry of Transport’s contact point responsible for facilitating procedures and resolving obstacles facing transport operators.

Al-Shahmani noted that the achievement comes in line with the directives of Minister of Transport Wahab Al-Hassani to support and expand Iraq’s role in regional trade and logistics.

He described the August results as a continuation of the steady growth seen in transit traffic and emphasized that the company is working to further develop operations under the TIR system.

According to Al-Shahmani, expanding the use of the TIR framework will help strengthen Iraq’s position as a key trade and transportation corridor connecting regional and international markets.

The TIR system simplifies customs and border procedures for international freight transport, helping goods move more efficiently across multiple countries while reducing delays and administrative burdens for carriers.

With transit volumes continuing to rise, Iraqi transport officials view the system as an important tool for boosting trade, supporting logistics services and increasing the country’s role in regional supply chains.
