Iraq is currently considering a proposal to surpass OPEC production limits in response to revenue losses stemming from the ongoing conflict with Iran. Reports indicate that if OPEC denies Iraq’s request for an increased production quota, Baghdad may choose to follow the example set by the UAE and withdraw from the organization, thereby allowing for unrestricted output. A pivotal decision is anticipated following Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi’s scheduled visit to Washington in mid-July. This visit heightens the urgency of the situation, as one of the critical factors for Iraq’s economic stability and the potential revaluation of the Iraqi Dinar is at stake. Should OPEC grant Iraq the freedom to produce at its capacity, the country could achieve prosperity; conversely, a departure from OPEC could lead to an immediate budget surplus, enhanced stability, and timely salary payments, given that oil constitutes 90% of Iraq’s budget. We are witnessing a crucial phase that could significantly impact the revaluation of the Iraqi Dinar.
