Michael Coates has officially joined the Solana Foundation as its new Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), bringing decades of experience from some of the biggest names in technology and cybersecurity.
Before joining Solana, Coates held senior security roles at Mozilla and Twitter, where he became the company’s first-ever CISO during a period of rapid global growth. He later founded Altitude Networks, an enterprise security company that eventually entered the crypto industry after being acquired by CoinList.
In a recent announcement, Coates said Solana’s massive scale played a major role in his decision to join the foundation. He pointed out that the network now processes more transactions each day than most of the crypto industry combined and supports tens of billions of dollars in daily stablecoin activity.
He also highlighted the growing use of Solana for tokenized assets. One example was the launch of tokenized SpaceX shares on the network, which took place on the same day the asset debuted on Nasdaq.
At the Solana Foundation, Coates will focus on improving security across the ecosystem. His responsibilities will include strengthening operational security, enhancing application security practices, and helping address risks that are unique to digital assets and blockchain technology.
He also plans to work closely with policymakers and industry standards groups to help shape cybersecurity regulations that affect the crypto sector.
Speaking about the current threat landscape, Coates said cybercriminals remain highly motivated to target digital assets because of their value. He also warned that artificial intelligence is creating new challenges for security teams, as attackers are increasingly using AI-powered tools.
At the same time, he believes AI can become a powerful defense tool when used correctly, helping organizations identify threats faster and improve their overall security posture.
Coates’ appointment reflects a broader trend across the crypto industry. As institutional adoption continues to grow, digital asset companies are increasingly hiring experienced leaders from technology, cybersecurity, and regulatory backgrounds to strengthen their operations and build trust with users and investors.
The industry has seen similar moves in recent years, with several former government officials and technology executives taking on key roles at crypto firms as the sector continues to mature and expand.
