Tether-backed Oobit unveils AI agent card for autonomous USDT spending

Crypto wallet startup Oobit has rolled out a new kind of payment tool — one that lets AI agents spend money on their own.

The company introduced “Agent Cards,” virtual cards backed by Visa. These cards allow AI systems to make payments using Tether without needing a human to step in.

Here’s the interesting part: the payments don’t go through traditional bank conversions. Instead, the funds come directly from Tether’s treasury. That means no need to convert crypto into fiat before spending.

In simple terms, AI agents can now pay for things like:

  • Subscriptions
  • Online ads
  • Cloud services

And they can do it automatically, based on pre-set instructions.

Each card is linked to a single AI agent. This makes everything traceable, so businesses can clearly see what the AI is doing and where the money is going.

To keep things under control, Oobit has built in strict limits. Businesses can set spending caps and restrict where the card can be used. These rules are enforced at the transaction level after companies complete compliance checks.

The system also works with popular AI tools like OpenAI, Claude, AutoGen, and LangChain. This makes it easier for businesses to plug these payment features into their existing AI workflows.

For now, the cards are only available to a small group of approved businesses. Oobit plans to slowly expand access as it tests how everything works in real-world use.

Industry leaders believe this could be a big shift. Brian Armstrong has said that AI agents could soon outnumber humans in online transactions, while Jeremy Allaire expects billions of AI agents to be active on blockchain networks in the next few years.

Oobit itself believes the next wave of internet users won’t be people — but AI systems.

This move builds on earlier work by the company. It has already connected crypto wallets to payment networks, including support for Phantom wallets on the Solana network, allowing users to spend crypto at millions of merchants worldwide.

Now, with Agent Cards, the focus is shifting from humans using crypto… to AI doing it on their behalf.
