Tether leads $15M funding for Mural to power AI agent payments

Tether has led a $15 million funding round for Mural, a New York-based financial technology company that is building payment systems for businesses and AI agents. The latest investment brings Mural’s total funding to $28 million.

North Island Ventures and existing investors also took part in the funding round. Mural plans to use the money to expand into international markets and improve its payment, banking, and compliance services.

Founded in 2022 by former Palantir engineers Sinclair Toffa and Chris Fernandes, Mural helps businesses manage accounts, send payments, verify identities, and meet financial regulations across traditional banking systems and blockchains.

The company works with businesses including payroll provider Deel, browser developer Opera, and financial technology platform Axexo. Its system allows businesses to handle payments in US dollars, local currencies, and stablecoins without building separate payment systems for each.

Mural said it has processed $2.1 billion in payments across 128 countries since launching its API in 2025. Its payment volume in 2026 has already reached nearly six times the total recorded in 2025. However, the company has not disclosed its valuation following the latest funding round.

A major focus for Mural is helping AI agents make payments on behalf of businesses. These software systems can carry out financial tasks automatically, but companies need clear rules to control how they use money.

Mural allows businesses to set spending limits, approve specific payment recipients, and require additional authorization for transactions above certain amounts. This helps companies control automated payments while keeping track of their financial activity.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said Mural’s ability to connect businesses with banks, payment networks, and stablecoin services was an important reason for the investment. Mural CEO Sinclair Toffa believes AI agents could become a major new group of users for financial services.

Mural is not a bank. Its payment services operate through Mural Networks, a money services business registered with FinCEN, and through federally chartered US banking partners where applicable.

The investment is part of Tether’s wider push into artificial intelligence and financial technology. On October 15, Tether Capital announced an investment in AIsa, a company that gives AI agents access to paid software, data, and computing services. AIsa’s total funding has now passed $9 million.

Tether Capital also participated in Tenstorrent’s $1.5 billion funding round on October 20. Tenstorrent develops processors, computing systems, and software for AI applications. The company was valued at $6.2 billion in that round, although Tether did not disclose the size of its investment.

These investments show Tether’s growing interest in different areas of AI, from computing technology to automated software and payment infrastructure.

Mural recently changed its name from Mural Pay. CEO Sinclair Toffa said the rebranding would not affect the company’s team, licenses, or compliance arrangements.
