The World Bank has announced its support for a major $900 million project aimed at improving Iraq’s road infrastructure and transportation network.
According to the World Bank, the initiative will focus on upgrading key roads that play a vital role in connecting cities, supporting trade, and strengthening Iraq’s economy. These roads are considered the backbone of transportation across the country and are important for both domestic travel and regional connectivity.
The project is expected to improve road safety, make transportation more reliable, and create new opportunities for businesses and communities throughout Iraq.
Road transport currently handles more than 90% of the country’s transportation needs. However, many roads suffer from poor maintenance, aging infrastructure, weather-related damage, and safety concerns, making travel and trade more difficult.
Although most of Iraq’s road network is paved, a large portion is in poor condition. This has affected the movement of goods and people, limited access to services, and slowed economic growth in many areas.
The World Bank noted that road construction projects can also create thousands of jobs and support wider economic activity by increasing demand for labor and local services.
In addition to improving transportation, the project aims to make Iraq’s road network more resilient to climate-related challenges. It is also expected to encourage greater private-sector investment and support the country’s long-term transportation strategy.
The project is expected to benefit around 7.9 million people across Iraq. This includes approximately three million women and 1.5 million young people living in areas connected by newly built or rehabilitated roads.
The initiative will support several Iraqi provinces and improve road links with neighboring countries, including Jordan, Syria, and Turkey, helping strengthen regional trade and economic cooperation.
Officials believe the investment could play an important role in modernizing Iraq’s transportation system, improving connectivity, and supporting long-term economic development across the country.
