$379m in Iraqi Assets Recovered from Abroad

The Iraq Fund for the Recovery of Smuggled Assets says it has recovered about $379 million of Iraqi money from abroad.

The fund’s chairman, Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, said they are working to sign new agreements with both local and international groups. The goal is to improve investigations and track down more missing Iraqi funds overseas.

He added that a large amount of money is still frozen or under investigation in other countries, including:

  • $193 million in Turkey
  • $700 million in Jordan
  • $1.45 billion in Syria

On the legal side, Al-Lami said the fund has filed 39 requests for judicial cooperation against people and groups suspected of holding Iraqi funds. These cases are being handled by a special judge under Iraqi law.

He also explained that once the money is recovered, it is sent to the Ministry of Finance and added to the country’s general budget.

In short, Iraq has recovered hundreds of millions so far, but much more money is still being pursued overseas.
