Iraq and Turkey are moving to strengthen their energy partnership, with both countries focusing on expanding cooperation in oil exports and major infrastructure projects.

During a meeting in Baghdad, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar and Iraq’s newly appointed Oil Minister Bassim Mohammed Khudair discussed ways to deepen energy ties and improve projects that connect Iraq with Turkey and international markets.

One of the main topics was the Iraq-Turkey Crude Oil Pipeline, which serves as a key export route for Iraqi oil to the Mediterranean. The two sides explored ways to improve the pipeline’s efficiency and maximize its role in supporting Iraq’s oil exports.

The ministers also discussed integrating energy infrastructure into the Development Road Project, Iraq’s ambitious transportation and trade corridor that aims to connect the Gulf region to Europe through Iraq and Turkey.

The talks reflect growing coordination between Baghdad and Ankara as both countries seek closer cooperation in energy, trade, and infrastructure development.

The discussions come at a time when regional tensions have highlighted the importance of diversifying Iraq’s export routes. Expanding the northern export corridor through Turkey could reduce Iraq’s reliance on the Strait of Hormuz, providing an alternative pathway for oil shipments during periods of instability.

Officials believe stronger energy links between Iraq and Turkey could enhance regional trade, improve export flexibility, and support Iraq’s long-term energy security strategy.

As cooperation continues to grow, both countries appear committed to developing infrastructure projects that strengthen economic ties and improve access to global energy markets.
