Member of Parliament Hussein Mahdi said Parliament is intensifying efforts to pass several key pieces of legislation in the coming period, with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) law among its top priorities.
Mahdi stated that political blocs and parliamentary committees are coordinating to advance a number of delayed laws that directly affect security and public services. He noted that lawmakers are working to resolve outstanding disagreements and move important legislation toward a vote.
According to Mahdi, the PMF law remains one of Parliament’s most significant priorities because of the force’s role within Iraq’s security framework. He explained that the proposed legislation aims to further institutionalize the PMF while ensuring its members receive legal protections, retirement benefits and privileges comparable to those granted to personnel in other military and security institutions.
He added that the law is intended to establish a clearer legal framework for PMF fighters and safeguard their rights through formal legislation.
Mahdi also stressed the importance of political consensus in accelerating the legislative process. He said cooperation among political parties would help place these laws on the agenda of upcoming parliamentary sessions and support their passage without further delays.
The law is expected to be part of a broader package of legislation that lawmakers are seeking to advance in the coming months as Parliament works through a backlog of pending bills.
