Iraq has officially opened a new gas processing unit at the East Baghdad oil field with a production capacity of 30 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
According to the Ministry of Oil, the processed gas will be sent directly to the Bismaya power station through a pipeline built by the State Company for Oil Projects (SCOP).
Oil Minister Basim Mohammed Khudhair Al-Abadi said the project is part of Iraq’s ongoing plan to stop gas flaring and make better use of associated gas by turning it into a valuable source of energy.
He explained that the project will help improve electricity supply across the country, reduce Iraq’s need for imported fuel, and lower harmful emissions in Baghdad.
The minister also praised Midland Oil Company for its management of the field and highlighted its cooperation with project operator Zhenhua Oil (EBS Petroleum). Ma Chen, head of EBS’s Chinese operations, thanked the Ministry of Oil for its support in helping complete the project.
Several senior officials attended the opening ceremony, including representatives from the Ministry of Oil, Ministry of Electricity, and other state energy companies.
Mohammed Yaseen Hassan, Director General of Midland Oil Company, described the launch of the new gas processing unit as an important achievement for the East Baghdad field and a positive step toward strengthening Iraq’s energy security.
The project is another move by Iraq to capture more gas that would otherwise be wasted, increase fuel supplies for power generation, and support the country’s growing electricity needs.
