Iraq is moving ahead with plans to develop associated gas at the Nahr Bin Umar oil field in Basra province. The project was discussed during a meeting led by Dr. Izzat Sabir Ismail, Deputy Minister of Oil for Gas Affairs, with officials from South Gas Company, the Planning and Follow-Up Directorate, and Halfaya Gas Company.

The meeting focused on the progress of the gas investment project and plans to increase processing capacity to 300 million standard cubic feet per day. The expansion will be carried out in two stages, with each phase adding 150 million standard cubic feet per day.

The gas investment and processing contract was signed in January 2024 between South Gas Company and Halfaya Gas Company. The first phase was planned with a capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day, while the contract also includes an option to add another 150 million in the second phase.

The project is part of Iraq’s wider effort to make better use of associated gas produced during oil operations and increase domestic gas processing capacity.
