Iraq is reviewing plans for a solar power station in Najaf province, with discussions under way about increasing the project’s capacity from 1,000 megawatts to 2,000 megawatts. The proposal also includes a battery energy storage system designed to account for 30% of the project.

According to Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity, Minister Ali Saad Wahib met with ACWA Power Chairman Mohammad Abunayyan on the sidelines of the WPC Energy conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The two sides discussed speeding up the submission and completion of the commercial offer for the Najaf solar project. They also explored the possibility of using ACWA Power’s experience to manage, operate and maintain Iraq’s power generation stations.

Another topic was the potential launch of a pilot project at one of Iraq’s existing power stations, which could help the country benefit from the Saudi company’s expertise in the energy sector.
