MP clarifies controversy over MPs salary increase

Kamel Anid Al-Akeili, head of the Qamidoon parliamentary bloc, denied today, Sunday, that the House of Representatives voted to raise members’ salaries and allowances.

“The news that indicated an increase in the salaries of the members of the House of Representatives is incorrect, indicating that former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi issued an order to reduce the salaries of the representatives,” Al-Akeili stated in his statement.

“The Federal Court issued a decision to address the issue,” he continued, “but the former Speaker of the House of Representatives excluded over 42 general managers from this treatment.”

He continued, “Based on a complaint filed by MP Basem Khashan, the judiciary nullified the decision of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, noting that what happened in last week’s session was a vote on organizing the work of the council and not increasing the salaries and allowances of council members.”
