A member of Parliament, Adnan Al-Danbous, said that efforts to pass the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Service and Retirement Law are still facing obstacles due to what he described as ongoing American pressure on the Iraqi government.

Al-Danbous explained that the draft law had reached advanced stages during the previous parliamentary session and was close to being put to a vote. However, he said the government later withdrew and froze the bill after facing pressure from the United States.

According to him, there is strong support within Parliament to approve the law once it is sent back by the Council of Ministers. He added that many lawmakers believe the draft should move forward because the PMF is an official security institution that already operates under an established legal framework.

Al-Danbous also claimed that Washington continues to oppose the return of the bill to Parliament, which he says is slowing down the process.

He called on the Iraqi government to take a firmer diplomatic stance and work to prevent outside interference in decisions related to the country’s official institutions.

The debate over the law remains ongoing, while lawmakers continue to wait for the government to resubmit the draft for parliamentary consideration.
