Former MP Yasser al-Husseini blamed Iraq’s political class for what he called growing U.S. disregard for Iraqi funds and revenues, following reports that about $500 million in Iraqi revenues was not transferred to Baghdad.
Al-Husseini argued the U.S. is using weak justifications to hold back Iraqi funds, while saying Iraqi leaders share responsibility for not creating stronger economic protections.
He said Iraq should have diversified how it sells oil and reduced dependence on a single financial path, including expanding use of other global currencies.
According to him, internal political divisions have made it easier for outside pressure to grow, especially on economic matters.
Al-Husseini said stronger political and economic planning would give Iraq more control over its finances and reduce vulnerability to outside actions.
