A member of Iraq’s State of Law Coalition, Bilal al-Nasiri, has revealed details of a major corruption investigation involving employees of the Nasiriyah Municipality in Dhi Qar Province.

Al-Nasiri said the Integrity Commission has launched a wide-ranging probe into alleged corruption within the municipality and has already arrested more than 60 employees. He noted that authorities have compiled a list of suspects and are continuing investigations to identify everyone involved.

According to Al-Nasiri, investigators are reviewing confessions and evidence to uncover additional individuals connected to the case, warning that the number of people implicated could rise as the investigation progresses.

He stated that corruption within the municipality has reportedly existed for more than 15 years and may involve complex cases related to land distribution, investment projects, and abuse of official positions.

One of the most serious allegations concerns municipal surveyors who allegedly used their knowledge of land records and plot numbers to seize investment land and sell it for large sums of money after obtaining approvals through official channels. Al-Nasiri described the land-sale file as particularly significant because some of the plots were reportedly sold for thousands of dollars.

He stressed that authorities must fully investigate the network and hold those responsible accountable, adding that the ongoing inquiry could uncover additional corruption cases linked to land and investment activities in Dhi Qar.
