Iraqi MP Jaafar Al-Zamili said on Sunday that the country’s electricity sector remains one of the most difficult and complicated challenges facing the government, calling for accountability for officials who failed to effectively manage the ministry in previous years.
Speaking on the issue, Al-Zamili described the electricity file as a complex and long-standing problem that requires a comprehensive review and practical solutions rather than temporary measures that have repeatedly failed to resolve citizens’ suffering.
He stressed that the ongoing electricity crisis highlights the need to hold responsible officials accountable for shortcomings in the management of the sector. According to Al-Zamili, firm and deterrent measures should be taken against those whose negligence contributed to wasted public funds and delayed progress in improving electricity services.
Al-Zamili argued that meaningful reform cannot be achieved without accountability. He said identifying and addressing past failures is an essential step toward preventing similar mistakes in the future.
In addition to accountability, he called for the development of realistic and effective plans aimed at revitalizing the electricity sector, improving infrastructure, and delivering more reliable services to citizens.
His remarks come as Iraq continues to face recurring electricity shortages, especially during periods of high demand, despite years of investment and spending in the sector. The issue remains one of the most important public service challenges facing the country and continues to be a major concern for both citizens and policymakers.
Al-Zamili emphasized that lasting improvement will require both administrative reform and practical long-term strategies capable of strengthening the electricity network and improving service quality across the country.
