As Iraq and the United States move into a new stage of their relationship, oil is becoming an increasingly important part of the conversation.
During Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s first visit to the White House in July, President Donald Trump made it clear that he sees a different future for US-Iraq ties. With the planned withdrawal of US forces by September 30, he suggested that American oil companies could play a larger role in Iraq instead.
Shifting the relationship toward trade, investment, and economic cooperation could create new opportunities for both countries. However, turning that vision into reality will not be easy. It will require major investments, long-term planning, and strong cooperation between both sides.
The need for economic change has become even more urgent after Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz highlighted how vulnerable Iraq remains because of its heavy dependence on oil exports. Any disruption to energy routes can quickly affect government revenues, economic stability, and public services.
As a result, new oil agreements and energy partnerships are being viewed as more than just business deals. They could become an important part of reshaping US-Iraq relations and helping Iraq strengthen its economy during a period of regional uncertainty.
