Ethereum Economic Zone unveils three cross-chain breakthroughs at Devcon

The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) has announced three major technical demonstrations involving CoW Swap, Safe, and post-quantum signatures. The developments show how applications running on Ethereum rollups can interact directly with the Ethereum mainnet within a single transaction, without requiring separate cross-chain transactions.

The announcement was made on November 4 ahead of live demonstrations at Devcon in Mumbai. According to the EEZ team, these developments represent three important milestones in making Ethereum’s mainnet and rollup networks work together more smoothly.

The first demonstration involved CoW Swap, which showed how users on a rollup could trade using liquidity available on Ethereum mainnet. The system completed the trade and delivered the resulting tokens back to the rollup within the same transaction. Users did not need a separate bridge transaction, wait for transfers, or provide another signature.

This could make it easier for newer rollups to access Ethereum’s existing liquidity instead of depending only on their own smaller trading pools. It could also help reduce problems such as limited liquidity and higher trading costs.

The second demonstration involved Safe, a popular multisignature wallet platform used by organizations and crypto treasury managers. Developers showed how wallet ownership and permissions could be updated across Ethereum mainnet and rollups through a single coordinated transaction.

This is important because organizations often manage wallets across several blockchain networks. Updating wallet owners and permissions separately on each network can create delays and security risks. The EEZ system aims to keep these changes coordinated and ensure that wallet information stays consistent across networks.

The third demonstration focused on post-quantum security. Developers verified a Falcon digital signature on a rollup and then used the verification result to authorize a transfer on Ethereum mainnet.

Falcon is a digital signature system designed to protect against potential attacks from future quantum computers. The EEZ team said carrying out the same verification directly on Ethereum mainnet would require around 5.5 million gas. By performing the verification on a rollup, the demonstration reduced gas consumption by approximately 91%.

The team said this approach could make it easier to handle complex security operations without putting the full computational burden on Ethereum mainnet.

These developments build on the Ethereum Economic Zone project introduced by Gnosis, Zisk and the Ethereum Foundation in April. The project aims to reduce fragmentation across Ethereum’s growing number of layer-2 networks and allow applications on different networks to work together more directly.

In August, GnosisDAO approved a plan to move Gnosis Chain toward becoming an Ethereum layer-2 network through governance proposal GIP 153. The transition is expected to use Ethereum for settlement and security while preserving existing applications, account balances, contract addresses and the chain identifier.

The initial deployment is targeted for late 2026 or early 2027, depending on technical readiness.

Overall, the latest demonstrations show how Ethereum could make trading, wallet management and advanced security operations across different networks faster and simpler, without requiring users to handle multiple separate transactions.
