Iraq’s Minister of Trade, Mustafa Nizar Jumaa, met with European Union Ambassador Clemens Smettner in Baghdad to discuss ways to strengthen trade and investment relations and support Iraq’s efforts to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).

According to the Ministry of Trade, the discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation between Iraq and the European Union, increasing investment opportunities, and enhancing trade exchange between the two sides.

During the meeting, Minister Jumaa called on the European Union to continue supporting Iraq’s WTO accession process, describing membership as an important step toward integrating Iraq more deeply into the global economy and attracting additional investment.

The minister also invited the EU ambassador to participate in the 50th Baghdad International Fair and proposed the possibility of organizing a specialized European exhibition at the fairgrounds to showcase products, technologies, and investment opportunities.

For his part, Ambassador Clemens Smettner reaffirmed the European Union’s interest in strengthening economic and trade ties with Iraq. He expressed support for efforts aimed at increasing cooperation, encouraging investment, and reducing obstacles that limit bilateral trade.

The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by Iraq to expand its international economic partnerships, attract foreign investment, and advance reforms needed to support its bid for WTO membership.
