Iraq’s Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee announced on Wednesday that security forces have dealt major blows to currency counterfeiting networks operating across the country.

According to the committee, several counterfeiting networks have been dismantled, their members arrested and large amounts of counterfeit money seized.

Committee member MP Yasser Watout said currency counterfeiting is a serious crime under Iraqi law and that authorities are continuing efforts to track down and dismantle any groups involved in such activities.

Watout explained that over the past four months, security forces have carried out a series of successful operations targeting networks that were producing counterfeit Iraqi and foreign currencies.

He said the operations resulted in five major strikes against these networks, leading to the arrest of numerous suspects and the seizure of millions of Iraqi dinars, as well as significant amounts of foreign currencies, including U.S. dollars.

Watout credited part of the success to cooperation from citizens, who provided valuable information that helped authorities identify and track the networks.

He also praised the Ministry of Interior and its specialized security teams, saying intelligence gathering and coordination played a key role in the operations.

According to Watout, the combination of public cooperation, intelligence work and targeted security operations enabled authorities to dismantle several dangerous counterfeiting networks that had been active in a number of Iraqi provinces.

He emphasized that efforts will continue to combat financial crimes and prevent counterfeit currency from circulating in local markets.
