Iraq and Türkiye have agreed to start work on the Development Road project, with both countries signing several agreements covering energy, transportation, education, and water sectors during Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to Ankara.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Ali al-Zaidi announced the move during a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday. He described the Development Road project as a “third river” that could connect Iraq and Türkiye with global markets and strengthen their role as a bridge between East and West.
The Iraqi Prime Minister also said that oil flows between the two countries would be increased.
President Erdoğan said Türkiye is ready to support Iraq’s development plans and highlighted the need for stronger cooperation in areas such as security, energy, transport, climate change, water resources, and trade.
