Al-Rutba district in western Anbar Province has been reconnected to Iraq’s national electricity grid through Al-Qaim, while electricity imports from Jordan have been temporarily suspended, according to local officials.

Al-Rutba District Commissioner Imad Al-Rishawi said the district is now receiving power through Al-Qaim after the completion of transmission towers connecting Al-Risha, Al-Rutba, and Al-Qaim. As a result, the Jordanian power line has been taken offline until the remaining work on the 400-kilovolt transmission line is completed.

He explained that once the project is fully finished, Iraq and Jordan are expected to discuss restarting the electricity connection, which is planned to provide up to 500 megawatts of power.

Jordan began supplying electricity to Al-Rutba in March 2024 as part of the first phase of the project. At that time, around 40 megawatts were delivered through a 132-kilovolt connection.

The Iraq-Jordan electricity link is part of Iraq’s broader strategy to strengthen its power network and reduce dependence on a single source of imported electricity. The country is also working on energy connections with Jordan, Turkey, and Gulf countries to improve the stability of its national grid.
