Iraq and the World Bank have discussed plans for a new loan aimed at supporting the country’s electricity sector.
The talks took place during a meeting on Wednesday between Electricity Minister Ali Saad Wahib and Emmanuel Salinas Munoz, the World Bank’s Country Director for Iraq.
According to the Ministry of Electricity, the meeting reviewed the progress of projects already being funded through the current World Bank loan. The two sides also discussed priorities for future financing and how it can help improve Iraq’s power infrastructure.
Key topics included projects designed to solve bottlenecks in the electricity transmission network, improve the efficiency of the national grid, and increase the amount of electricity reaching areas with high demand.
The discussions also covered projects related to natural gas supplies and Iraq’s efforts to strengthen electricity connections with Gulf countries.
Minister Wahib stressed that funding should be directed toward projects that have a clear and direct impact on developing the country’s electricity infrastructure. He said these investments are important for improving system efficiency, increasing power supply, and supporting the ministry’s long-term plans to provide better electricity services across Iraq.
The meeting reflects Iraq’s continued efforts to modernize its power sector and address long-standing challenges in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
