Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi met with Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar on Thursday to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries across several key sectors.
According to the Iraqi government’s media office, the talks focused on energy, oil and gas, electricity, agriculture, and major regional infrastructure projects aimed at boosting economic integration.
During the meeting, al-Zaidi announced plans to establish a joint Iraqi-Turkish investment fund that would help finance development and investment projects across Iraq. The initiative is intended to accelerate the implementation of strategic projects while deepening economic cooperation between Baghdad and Ankara.
The Prime Minister also encouraged Turkish companies to expand their presence in Iraq’s agricultural sector, highlighting opportunities in livestock development, agricultural production, food processing, and supply chain integration. He said increased investment in these areas could contribute to economic growth and strengthen food security.
For his part, Bayraktar conveyed greetings from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to strengthening ties with Iraq.
The Turkish minister emphasized Ankara’s strong interest in the Development Road project, describing it as one of the region’s most important strategic and economic initiatives. He noted that President Erdoğan is closely following the project’s progress and sees it as a key opportunity to enhance regional trade and connectivity.
Bayraktar also expressed Turkey’s readiness to expand strategic partnerships with Iraq in a range of sectors, including oil, natural gas, electricity, transportation, and regional infrastructure development.
The meeting reflects the growing cooperation between Iraq and Turkey as both countries seek to strengthen economic ties, expand investment opportunities, and advance major projects that could improve regional connectivity and long-term economic development.
Officials from both sides indicated that continued collaboration in energy, agriculture, and infrastructure will remain a priority as Iraq and Turkey work to build a stronger and more comprehensive economic partnership.
