Iraqi MP Ahmed Majeed of the Ishraqa Kanoun bloc has accused influential political groups of obstructing Parliament’s oversight role by preventing several Ministry of Trade officials from appearing before lawmakers.
Speaking on Monday, Majeed said a number of ministry officials had been scheduled to attend parliamentary sessions to discuss issues related to the Ministry of Trade’s operations. However, he claimed that political interference prevented the meetings from taking place.
According to Majeed, such actions weaken Parliament’s ability to perform its constitutional duty of overseeing government institutions and holding officials accountable.
He stressed that Parliament has clear legal and constitutional authority to summon officials and question them on matters related to public funds, government performance, and administrative practices. He argued that preventing these meetings raises concerns about why certain issues are not being openly discussed.
Majeed called for an end to political interference in the work of parliamentary committees, saying lawmakers should be able to carry out their oversight responsibilities without pressure from political parties or influential groups.
He also emphasized the need for transparency, urging that the relevant officials be invited to appear before Parliament so that important issues can be discussed openly and reviewed properly.
According to Majeed, parliamentary oversight remains one of the most effective tools for fighting corruption, protecting public funds, and evaluating the performance of government institutions.
He called for all files that may require investigation or accountability to be opened and reviewed, warning that oversight procedures should not be blocked for political reasons.
The comments come amid ongoing discussions about strengthening accountability mechanisms within state institutions and increasing Parliament’s role in monitoring government performance and addressing public concerns.
