An Iraqi lawmaker says it’s unlikely the current government will send the 2026 budget anytime soon.
MP Mohammed Al-Shammari explained that the government is now in a caretaker role, which limits what it can legally do. Because of that, it can’t submit major laws like the country’s full budget.
He said the government’s financial powers are very restricted in this situation. It can only spend about 1/12 of necessary expenses each month—basically covering essentials like salaries and basic operations.
According to him, preparing a full budget for 2026 under these conditions is not realistic.
Al-Shammari added that the law is clear: caretaker governments are meant to handle day-to-day matters, not big financial plans or long-term projects.
