Member of Parliament Mohammed Al-Moussawi said the Iraqi government is expected to send the proposed 2027 federal budget law to Parliament during this month.
According to Al-Moussawi, the Parliamentary Finance Committee will begin reviewing the budget as soon as it arrives. The committee plans to study all of its provisions before presenting it for discussion and voting in Parliament at the beginning of next month.
He explained that the 2027 budget is expected to be different from previous budgets, with a stronger focus on development projects and supporting productive sectors of the economy.
Al-Moussawi said there is both government and parliamentary support for reducing unnecessary spending while directing more resources toward programs that can strengthen economic growth and increase domestic production.
He added that efforts are also being made to reduce a number of government expenditures that are viewed as non-essential, while giving greater attention to investment and development priorities.
Al-Moussawi expressed confidence that Parliament will complete discussions and approve the budget before the start of the new year.
Last week, the Parliamentary Finance Committee hosted Finance Minister Faleh Al-Sari to discuss proposed amendments to the budget law. The talks included a detailed review of plans to move away from the current spending mechanism and adopt a program-based budgeting system, which is intended to link government spending more closely to specific goals and results.
