New Siemens Energy Cooperation Deal for Iraq

Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity and Siemens have signed a new Principles of Cooperation Agreement, marking the fourth phase of energy cooperation between the two sides. The agreement was signed in Berlin during an official visit by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and was witnessed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The new phase aims to continue cooperation in developing Iraq’s electricity sector, including power generation, transmission, and distribution projects. The agreement is part of a long-term partnership designed to modernize the country’s energy infrastructure and improve the reliability of electricity supplies.

According to Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity, the cooperation framework includes plans for new combined-cycle and thermal power plants that will use high-efficiency technologies and take advantage of fuel resources available within Iraq. The agreement also covers the installation of new transmission stations, upgrades to existing networks, and measures to reduce bottlenecks in the national grid.

The two sides will also continue maintenance programs for existing power stations to improve performance, increase available generation capacity, and strengthen the stability of the electricity system. In addition, discussions include financing mechanisms for future projects and training programs aimed at developing the skills of Ministry of Electricity personnel.

During his visit to Berlin, Prime Minister Al-Zaidi held a separate meeting with Christian Bruch, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Energy, to discuss expanding cooperation in the energy sector. The discussions focused on upgrading electricity transmission and distribution networks and exploring ways to diversify power generation sources beyond natural gas.

Iraq continues to face significant electricity shortages, particularly during periods of high demand. The government views cooperation with Siemens as an important step toward increasing generation capacity, improving grid efficiency, and meeting the country’s growing energy needs.
