Former Deputy Chairman of Iraq’s Parliamentary Economic Committee, Yasser al-Husseini, said the country’s investment law was delayed in recent years due to political disagreements, warning that the situation has negatively affected Iraq’s investment climate.

Speaking on Saturday, al-Husseini said the legislation was stalled for political reasons despite its importance in supporting the national economy and attracting both local and foreign investment.

He stressed that Iraq needs to move beyond political disputes and focus on reactivating the investment law to help improve the business environment and encourage economic growth.

According to al-Husseini, the next phase should prioritize implementing reforms that make Iraq a more attractive destination for investors. He argued that stronger investment activity could contribute to job creation, economic diversification, and increased private-sector participation.

He also emphasized that the development of the investment sector depends on having clear and stable legislation, along with genuine political commitment to enforcing laws fairly and effectively.

Al-Husseini noted that investors require confidence in the legal and regulatory framework before committing capital, making legislative stability a key factor in improving Iraq’s investment prospects.

His comments come as Iraq continues efforts to attract new investment and reduce its dependence on oil revenues by expanding activity in other sectors of the economy.
