Re-denomination and revaluation are not synonymous… Re-denomination involves altering the figures displayed on the currency, typically by eliminating zeros… This does not inherently enhance your purchasing power. For instance, if 1,000 old dinars equate to one new dinar, your bank balances, prices, wages, and debts would be adjusted according to that same ratio… It does not automatically increase your wealth… In contrast, a currency revaluation signifies an increase in the official exchange value of the currency in relation to another currency or benchmarks… For example, if one US dollar can purchase approximately 1300 units of a currency, and the CBI modifies the official exchange rate so that $1 now buys only 1,000 units, that currency would have appreciated in value against the US dollar… When Iraq discusses the deletion or removal of zeros, investors should inquire whether officials are referring to a re-denomination… or if they are addressing a change in the exchange rate or monetary reforms that encompass both aspects?
