Tether has reportedly invested $20 million in Argentine digital bank Ualá, further expanding its presence in Latin America’s rapidly growing financial sector.
According to reports, the investment was part of Ualá’s $197 million funding round, which was announced in March and led by Allianz X. While Ualá previously confirmed that Tether participated in the funding round, the size of its investment was not disclosed at the time. Recent reports indicate that Tether contributed $20 million.
The deal is the latest in a series of investments that highlight Tether’s growing focus on Latin America.
Earlier this month, Tether invested another $20 million in Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange Mercado Bitcoin. The funding is intended to support the expansion of blockchain infrastructure, tokenized assets, lending services, and digital capital markets across the region.
Before that, Tether led a $14 million Series A funding round for Argentine crypto platform Belo. The investment was aimed at helping Belo expand its crypto payment solutions and financial services.
These moves show that Tether is not only interested in stablecoins but is also actively investing in companies that can help drive digital finance adoption throughout Latin America.
At the same time, Tether continues to promote the use of USDT for real-world financial transactions.
In Bolivia, government officials are reportedly considering a proposal that would allow USDT to be used alongside the local currency and the U.S. dollar within the country’s payment system. The discussions come as the country faces an ongoing shortage of foreign currency. Several local banks have already introduced services connected to USDT, reflecting growing interest in stablecoin-based payments.
Beyond Latin America, Tether is also expanding its focus on business and enterprise payments.
Recently, the company led a $7 million funding round for Pact Labs, a move designed to bring stablecoin payments into the U.S. payroll industry. The goal is to allow businesses to pay employees using blockchain-based payment systems, potentially increasing efficiency and reducing settlement times.
Tether has also been exploring corporate treasury payments. Earlier this month, Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai Motor Mexico completed a pilot cross-border payment using USDT on the Avalanche blockchain. The transaction reportedly transferred $20,000 in about seven minutes, demonstrating how stablecoins can be used for fast international settlements.
These developments reflect Tether’s broader strategy of expanding stablecoin use beyond crypto trading and into everyday financial operations, including payroll, treasury management, remittances, and business payments.
Despite increasing competition in the stablecoin market, USDT remains the world’s largest stablecoin by market capitalization. At the time of reporting, its market value stood at approximately $184.4 billion, reinforcing Tether’s dominant position in the digital asset industry.
With continued investments in banks, crypto platforms, payment companies, and financial infrastructure, Tether is positioning itself as a major player in the future of digital finance across both emerging and developed markets.
