The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) announced on Monday that it has launched a large security operation across the Nineveh Plains to help protect visitors during the Ashura pilgrimage.
According to a PMF statement, the operation began in the morning and covers several areas, including Bashiqa, Nimrud, and Hamdaniya. The mission is being carried out by the intelligence unit of the 30th Brigade under the Nineveh Operations Command, with support from the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Regiments, as well as the K9 Unit.
The PMF said the operation is part of its wider security plan for the month of Muharram and the Ashura ceremonies. Security forces will increase their presence in villages, along main roads, and on pilgrimage routes to help ensure the safety of visitors.
Officials said the goal is to maintain stability across the region, support the smooth running of the pilgrimage, and provide a secure environment for all participants.
