Iraq’s Ministry of Water Resources has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Turkish technology company Kolaysoft to strengthen cooperation in smart water resource management and digital transformation.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Water Resources Muthanna Ali Mahdi Al Tamimi, who stated that the partnership aims to improve the management and use of Iraq’s water resources through modern technology and data-driven systems. He also emphasized that the agreement does not create any financial obligations for the ministry.
Under the MoU, both sides will work together to develop advanced systems for monitoring and measuring surface water and groundwater resources. The project will also focus on collecting, managing, and analyzing water-related data to support better decision-making.
The agreement includes plans to create monitoring and analysis programs that track water consumption and usage across different sectors. It also calls for the adoption of remote meter-reading devices and modern sensing technologies to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Another key part of the partnership involves training and capacity-building programs for ministry employees, helping staff develop the technical skills needed to operate and manage modern water systems.
The two sides will also cooperate on digital transformation initiatives that align with Iraq’s national development priorities. These efforts are expected to modernize water management operations and improve the ministry’s ability to monitor and respond to changing water conditions.
In addition, the agreement includes the development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) that will map water sources, facilities, and consumption points across the country. The system will be connected to digital maps, providing a clearer picture of Iraq’s water infrastructure and helping officials manage resources more effectively.
The partnership reflects Iraq’s growing focus on using technology and digital solutions to address water challenges, improve resource management, and support long-term sustainability.
