Oil Ministry clarifies Iraq's position on OPEC and confirms there is no intention to withdraw

Iraq’s Ministry of Oil has denied reports claiming that the country is considering leaving OPEC, saying such reports do not reflect the official position of the Iraqi government.

In a statement released on Thursday, the ministry stressed that neither the Prime Minister nor the government has raised the issue of withdrawing from the organization.

The ministry explained that Iraq’s position has always been focused on reviewing production quotas to ensure they match the actual and sustainable production capacity of each member country. According to the statement, this approach is being discussed within the framework of existing agreements and understandings among OPEC members and their allies.

Officials said OPEC and its partner countries have already begun a process to reassess the maximum sustainable production capacity of member states. The review is being carried out with the support of an independent international consulting firm, and Iraq is actively participating in the process.

The ministry also noted that member countries have started gradually restoring previously reduced oil production levels. The return of these voluntary production cuts is expected to be completed over the coming months, which could help increase Iraq’s future production quota.

According to the statement, any discussions about production limits or quotas are handled through technical studies and consensus among OPEC members and partner countries, rather than through unilateral decisions.

The ministry added that there is broad international understanding of Iraq’s unique circumstances and the challenges faced by its oil sector over the past decades.

It said this recognition is important because it supports Iraq’s efforts to rebuild its production capacity and strengthen its position as one of the leading oil producers within OPEC.

The statement concluded by reaffirming Iraq’s commitment to working within OPEC’s framework while continuing to seek fair production levels that reflect the country’s long-term energy potential.
