Security forces in Dhi Qar Governorate have arrested more than 30 people accused of involvement in illegal usurious lending operations during a large-scale crackdown carried out over the past three days.

According to a security source, the campaign covered nine cities across the governorate and targeted individuals suspected of exploiting citizens through high-interest loans and other unlawful lending practices.

The source said the suspects are currently being held while investigations continue. Authorities believe the accused used various methods to profit from borrowers, including confiscating bank cards and charging excessive interest rates that left many families struggling with heavy debts.

Officials noted that usurious lending has become a serious problem for many households, placing financial pressure on ordinary citizens and creating long-term economic hardships.

The source stressed that Iraqi law provides strict penalties for those involved in such activities and confirmed that security operations will continue in an effort to combat illegal lending networks and protect vulnerable families from financial exploitation.

Authorities have pledged to pursue anyone found to be participating in usurious lending practices and to take legal action against those responsible.
