The Solana Foundation has appointed Michael Coates as its new Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), bringing in a cybersecurity veteran with experience at some of the world’s best-known technology companies.
Coates announced the move in a post on X, saying he will lead security efforts across the Solana ecosystem as blockchain adoption continues to grow and more institutions enter the digital asset market.
Before joining the Solana Foundation, Coates held several high-profile security leadership positions. He served as Head of Security at Mozilla during the browser industry’s competitive growth period and later became the first Chief Information Security Officer at Twitter (now X). He also founded enterprise security company Altitude Networks, which later entered the crypto industry following its acquisition by CoinList.
Coates said Solana’s rapid growth was one of the main reasons he accepted the role. He pointed to the network’s large transaction volume, significant stablecoin activity, and increasing use in tokenization projects as evidence of its expanding importance within the blockchain sector.
According to Coates, his responsibilities will include strengthening operational security, improving application security standards, and addressing cybersecurity risks specific to digital assets and blockchain networks.
He also plans to work with policymakers, regulators, and industry groups to help shape cybersecurity standards and best practices for the crypto sector.
Coates highlighted the growing sophistication of cyber threats facing the industry, noting that criminals remain highly motivated to target digital assets. He also warned that artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in cyberattacks, although he believes AI can also become a powerful tool for improving defensive security measures.
His appointment reflects a broader trend across the cryptocurrency industry, where companies and blockchain organizations are increasingly recruiting experienced leaders from technology, cybersecurity, finance, and regulatory backgrounds to strengthen their operations.
As institutional participation in digital assets continues to expand, security remains one of the industry’s top priorities, making experienced cybersecurity leadership increasingly valuable for major blockchain ecosystems such as Solana.
