Erbil, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has inaugurated the Megal Project, a $100 million private-sector investment designed to advance agriculture, livestock production, and the food industry in the Kurdistan Region.

Spanning 366 acres, the Megal Project includes a slaughterhouse, shopping center, animal control facility, wastewater treatment plant, waste incineration unit, and landscaped public areas. The integrated complex aims to strengthen food security, modernize agricultural production, and create new employment opportunities across multiple sectors.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the project’s strategic importance for the region’s economic and food systems.

“This initiative represents a major step toward agricultural self-sufficiency and food security in Kurdistan,” he said, noting that the project exemplifies how private investment can drive sustainable growth.

Barzani also highlighted the project’s role in building connections between industries and empowering local workers.

“The Megal Project integrates livestock production, fodder supply, and animal trading — creating business partnerships, recycling opportunities, and more than 1,000 new jobs,” he stated.

Officials said the project reflects the KRG’s broader vision to diversify the regional economy, reduce reliance on imports, and promote public–private partnerships in key productive sectors.

By combining modern agricultural practices with environmentally responsible facilities, the Megal Project is expected to enhance local food production capacity and support rural economic development across the Kurdistan Region.
