Iraqi MP Abbas Hayal called on the next Iraqi government to cancel the security agreement with the United States, saying the deal has become a threat to Iraq’s sovereignty and national security.
Speaking to dinaropinions.com, Hayal said the agreement with the American side no longer serves Iraq’s national interests and has caused what he described as serious harm during recent years. He added that continuing the agreement represents a direct violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.
Hayal stressed that the incoming government should make ending the agreement one of its top strategic priorities, arguing that many Iraqis want to remove any foreign presence they believe negatively affects the country’s stability and independence.
He also said calls to cancel the agreement are linked to broader demands for Iraq to make its own decisions independently and build a national defense system based on self-reliance and balanced international partnerships rather than dependence on foreign powers.
The issue of foreign military presence and security cooperation with the United States remains one of the most debated political topics inside Iraq, especially among groups calling for stronger national sovereignty and reduced foreign influence.
