Ahmed Shaheed, Deputy Head of the “Abshir Ya Iraq” parliamentary bloc, said on Wednesday that his bloc will push next week for the draft Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) law to be sent to Parliament for discussion and approval.
Shaheed said the law is important for ensuring the rights of PMF members, as well as the families of those who were killed or injured while serving. He explained that Parliament is expected to take steps next week to move the legislation forward and complete the required procedures.
He also warned that if certain groups continue to block the bill, his bloc may publicly identify those responsible for delaying it. According to Shaheed, passing the law is a long-awaited demand for many PMF members.
He noted that around 250,000 PMF personnel are waiting for the law to be approved, along with thousands of families of martyrs and wounded members seeking the same recognition and support provided to members of Iraq’s security forces.
Shaheed said the PMF played a major role in fighting terrorism and defending the country, making significant sacrifices over the years. He added that the proposed law would help protect the legal and administrative rights of PMF members while creating a clearer framework for how the institution operates in the future.
